iPhone Dual SIM: Why Data Stops During Calls
iPhone Dual SIM can leave you with a puzzle abroad: maps load, a call reaches your Taiwan number, and the next search stalls. If it works again when the call ends, do not start by buying another eSIM. For travellers departing Taiwan, the useful question is what changed between the moment before answering, the conversation and the moment afterwards. Record that sequence while the phone remains configured, rather than treating every pause as a failed travel package.
Identify the call before diagnosing the data
A cellular voice call to your home number and a LINE call inside an app are different events. Write down which happened and which line received it. An app conversation uses an internet connection, possibly Wi-Fi; it does not by itself test how the Taiwan carrier handles a call to its mobile number. If you compare the two without noting the connection, the result can send you towards the wrong setting.
Imagine waiting outside a station in Japan when someone from home calls. You notice that a fresh map search does not complete during the conversation. Finish the observation from a place where you can stop and look at the phone. Keep the location and the task comparable. A moving train, a new Wi-Fi connection or several settings changed at once would make it harder to identify the cause.
Give iPhone Dual SIM a before, during and after record
Use an ordinary small webpage for comparison, rather than a payment or urgent account login. If a test call is needed, agree it in advance after confirming the home carrier’s overseas conditions and charges. You can also record an incident that already happened instead of creating an unnecessary call. Do not assume that a successful test at home in Taiwan reproduces the destination’s roaming conditions.
| Stage of the same ordinary call | What to observe | What the observation can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Before answering | Can a small webpage load through the travel line with Wi-Fi off? | Establish a working or failed baseline |
| During the call on the Taiwan home line | Does that same webpage stop loading? | A call-linked change needs investigation; not proof of an exhausted plan |
| After hanging up | Does ordinary data return without changing the profile? | Recovery points to the call state; persistent failure needs separate data checks |
If the page fails before any call, the case is already broader than a call-time interruption. If it stops only during the conversation and returns afterwards, preserve that evidence. If it remains unavailable after hanging up, note that separately. Those are different starting points for support. A familiar app displaying old content is not enough: compare a page that needs a new load, not a cached screen.
Why enabling a switch is not a universal answer
Apple’s iPhone guide describes one cellular-data network; a different voice line can interrupt data when switching is unavailable. That helps frame the observation, but it is not a promise that every iPhone and carrier combination behaves identically. The actual device, software, enabled lines and carrier services still matter.
For iPhone Dual SIM, distinguish the selected mobile-data line from permission to switch that line. Before changing either, note the existing choice. A switch that permits a different line to carry data is a different decision from continuing to use the travel allowance. Ask what service the other line would use, rather than assuming all data stays inside the product you purchased.
Apple’s Dual SIM guidance, note 5 says switching does not work during data roaming; carrier availability and extra charges need confirmation. This restriction matters to the decision. Do not use a blanket instruction to enable switching, or enable roaming on every line, as the fix for a paused webpage.
Keep product categories separate from the actual phone setting
An iPhone Dual SIM setup must be checked on the device. A product described as Local Network or Roaming is a catalogue classification; the travel line’s delivered instructions govern its required roaming setting. The label alone cannot establish whether the switching function’s conditions are met. A Local Network purchase therefore does not promise uninterrupted data while another line is in a call.
Preserve the travel product’s instructions while you investigate. Do not turn a required roaming setting off just to imitate a different package, and do not turn Taiwan-line data roaming on merely because another traveller said it fixed their phone. The question is which connection and contract a proposed change would use, and whether you have accepted those conditions.
Ask the Taiwan carrier a precise question
Tell the original carrier that the Taiwan number receives ordinary calls abroad while another line supplies data. Ask about that account’s overseas voice availability, charges and any data service a switch could use. If Wi-Fi Calling is suggested, confirm support for the account and destination as well as the fees. Do not treat the feature name as proof that calls are free or universally available.
Choose an arrangement you understand. You might plan to finish a nonurgent conversation before refreshing a travel task, or arrange a later call when an appropriate connection is available. A companion can retain the meeting address while you speak. These are practical continuity choices; buying more travel gigabytes does not decide which line handles an ordinary call.
Test one variable and keep the profile installed
For iPhone Dual SIM troubleshooting, save the model, software version, destination, line labels, selected data line and relevant switch states. Record whether Wi-Fi was active and what happened around one cellular voice call. Change one setting only when its conditions and costs are understood, then compare the same simple task. Keep an image of the original choices so that you can explain what changed.
If data stays unavailable after the call ends, separately check the enabled travel line, purchased country, validity, remaining allowance and delivered settings. Keep the installed profile during the investigation. Do not delete it or erase the phone as a first response; reinstalling is subject to the purchased terms and would introduce another variable into a connection that may have worked moments earlier.
Buy data for the trip, not a guarantee about calls
Two Polaris eSIM examples checked on 19 October 2026 are the Japan Roaming 10GB / 30-day option and the Singapore Local Network 5GB / 30-day option. Both mark validity as starting on use; follow the selected delivery instructions. These are data-budget examples, not entitlements to Taiwan-carrier voice or SMS, and unconfirmed telecom fields are not guarantees.
An iPhone Dual SIM plan for the journey should leave you with a usable record: data worked or failed before the conversation, changed or did not change during it, and returned or stayed unavailable afterwards. Share that sequence when asking for help. It is more informative than “eSIM broken,” and it keeps the purchase decision separate from the carrier-dependent handling of a call.
